QUATRO SEA DAY AND PATTE’S BIRTHDAY!

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sister!!! 


Today, (as we celebrated PATTE’S BIRTHDAY!), we sailed around Cape Horn, located off the southern tip of mainland South America.  It was written in our Viking Daily that “Navigating the waters around the cape are a challenge because of the area’s treacherous winds, large waves and fierce currents, as well as many icebergs.” (Cue in the theme song from the “Titanic”! 😳)


It was a memorable day, to be sure!  First, it was PATTE’S BIRTHDAY!!! (Have I mentioned that already?) And, second, we actually sailed from the Pacific Ocean into the Atlantic Ocean!  It was truly a sight to see!  (Not really—couldn’t see anything different between the two!)  Last, but not least, the waves were so large, plates and glasses crashed to the floor several times during breakfast!  (No hips were broken, I’m happy to report!)

Here is a picture of the lighthouse on Cape Horn!  The Captain circled the Cape twice so that no one would miss it!


Here’s where we were sailing today.  We were truly at the VERY bottom of the world! 


We all attended “The Order of the Drake Ceremony” which was a celebration of the Viking Jupiter ‘Rounding the Horn.’  The Captain called for all participants to line up,


a ladle of cold water was poured over our heads,



blue something or other (icing?) was spooned onto our noses,



and everyone was given a traditional shot of Aquavit to knock back!  WOW!


A bit later, much to her delight, Patte was serenaded by a favorite waitress, Yuwadee!  Remember, it was PATTE’S BIRTHDAY!


John and I attended a documentary film called “Wild Antarctica.”  Antarctica is now a bucket list destination for me!


In honor of PATTE’S BIRTHDAY, we all attended high tea,



and were officially stuffed BEFORE dinner!!!  But dinner was served and, because it was PATTE’S BIRTHDAY, it was exceptionally good!




It was a WONDERFUL BIRTHDAY dinner for PATTE!!!


Afterwards, John and I (reluctantly) went with Patte and Mike to the Country performance put on by our Viking Vocalists.  John and I are not fans of Country Music (at all) but we went because it was PATTE’S BIRTHDAY!


And, besides the Country music, the show was great!


Patte even got her picture taken with one of the stars!  (It’s her BIRTHDAY, you know!)


We listened to some guitar music played by John (not my John!) and called it a night!  It was PATTE’S BIRTHDAY today and all the celebrating totally wore Mike, John and me out!


BUENAS NOCHES, everyone!  

(I stayed up until a minute before midnight so that I could be the last one to say, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sister!”)

TOURING MAIPO VALLEY CHILEAN WINERIES!

We boarded a large touring van, after numerous cups of delicious coffee, and headed into Chile’s wine country!  We drove past some magnificent street art (sorry, couldn’t capture pictures from the bus—hope to walk by some later?) and beautiful landscapes! This was our first glimpse of a Chilean vineyard with the mountains as a backdrop!  Can you say “AMAZING”? FIRST STOP: VINA UNDURRAGA WINERY The tour of the winery, the grapevines, and the grounds was amazing!  And then we drank FOUR WINES (for breakfast)! SECOND STOP: SANTA EMA WINERY Santa Ema was a beautiful and modern winery.  We walked around the grounds admiring the views and then we drank THREE WINES! THIRD STOP:  LUNCH AT ZIN FANDEL! We each had scrumptious lunches here (that were actually dinners)!  We were all happy for that as we had lots of morning wine to soak up!   Mike was very perplexed by this sign (it was in the restroom)!  He came back to the table, showed everyone this picture...

CEMETERY OF RECOLETA AND FLORIDA STREET BROWSING!

We woke up and it was the very last day of our “Journey To The End of The World.”  After John returned from having coffee with an old work buddy, we decided to spend it in (you are not going to believe this) A CEMETERY!    Cemetery of Recoleta is the home of the world’s largest mausoleums!  We saw that a Norah Lange was buried there, so the big search began (she simply had to be a long lost relative of Patte and mine)!  We found her, but only after a lot of looking and some help from Mike and one of the attendants!  (John and I are rethinking our burial plans to include, perhaps, a tiny house!) We searched high and low through the maze of a cemetery, and finally found Eva Peron’s burial site.  The “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” lady!  Her story is fascinating (for more information, Google it)! PUERTO MONTT, FRUTILLAR AND PUERTO VARAS, CHILE!

 We woke to this lovely weather! 😳😳😳 And we were scheduled to take one of these tenders over to Port Montt at 11:30AM.  What you probably can’t tell from these pictures was that these tenders were rocking back and forth in the waves! (Where’s the Dramamine?) The forecast called for improvement and, thank goodness, after breakfast it had improved!  We lined up to board our tender, and found a spot where we could gaze at the horizon through the windows, if need be! Take a look at our ride over to the mainland! 😳🤪😳 Patte picked up a new iPhone and took it everywhere today! So, whenever we were on our cell phones 🤪, she took her’s out as well! We (somehow) survived the tender ride and arrived at Puerto Montt! The sun was shining brightly and it had turned into a gorgeous day!  If you look closely behind us, in the distance, you’ll see a volcano, Vulcan Calbuco!
